Writing for NPR, Rachel Syme reviews a new memoir by poet Kelle Groom, I Wore the Ocean in the Shape of A Girl. Groom artfully addresses her struggles with alcoholism and self-mutilation, multiple violent assaults, becoming a teenage mother who had to give up her son, learning of and grieving her son’s death in toddlerhood, and her use of poetry to cope with her particular litany of tragedies. Syme’s article includes an excerpt from the book.
